Little Women

An elegant classic based on both sisterhood and womanhood.

“Watch and pray, dear, never get tired of trying, and never think it is impossible to conquer your fault.”

About a month ago, I was given a very special copy of this beautiful novel 'Little Women' by Louisa M Alcott and I honestly could not be more grateful. From start to finish, I found myself enraptured in the four sisters lives and with each chapter felt more whisked away by the magic of Alcott’s narration.

The story begins at Christmas time as Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy discuss the sorrows they feel of being poor and we immediately get a sense of each of the little girls’ personalities and characters.

Meg, the oldest of the four, is pretty but often finds herself swayed by material temptations and dreams of being wealthy. Jo is good-hearted and loving whilst continually defying female stereotypes of the society she lives in. Beth is a reserved and sweet music lover and Amy, the youngest, can be considered a little selfish yet very socially graceful. Even as the sisters quarrel like all siblings do, they stay loving and caring towards one another as they wait for their father to return home from the war.

The didactic language is both heart-warming and encouraging as the girls work on improving their individual flaws throughout their journey to womanhood and I would recommend this classic novel to anyone who is a true bibliophile!

You can watch the trailer for the film adaptation of Little Women here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AST2-4db4ic

But I would recommend reading the novel first!
