The Rain

Full of tension, action, and thrills.

''Just one drop will kill you''

‘The Rain’ written by Virginia Bergin is set in a dystopian version of our world where rain is no longer as we know it. It has become infected and deadly. Teenager Ruby Morris seems to be the only person alive for miles and she must find help. In places, the book can be quite grisly and disturbing yet for the most part Bergin manages to use Ruby’s tactful sarcasm to (appropriately) add humour into even the darkest of places.

The book is a wonderful mix of everything including crime, horror, sci-fi and even a bit of romance which makes it likeable to an abundance of different audiences which is something I find incredibly clever. Bergin tells a story that grips you from front to back, whilst simultaneously uniting bookworms of all different genres – if that doesn’t deserve a round of applause what does?!

One of my favourite elements of this book is the vivid and authentic descriptions; unlike many other dystopian novels, Bergin’s depiction of what our world would look like in chaos comes across much more believable and realistic. Landscapes aren’t barren and deserted but instead they’re filled with abandoned cars and bodies of people attempting to run to safety.

Admittedly, there were a few times in the book that I was unsure how on earth Ruby had survived as long as she had so far but eventually I came to realise that her mistakes and blunders just made her even more authentic. In my opinion, I’d say that the genuine nature of ‘The Rain’ is undoubtedly it’s best attribute, making it stand boldly out from the rest.

I would recommend this book to anyone as it’s perfect blend of genres is enrapturing to any reader!
